The answer is indeed very simple. At least the 3 12 inch shells are enough longer that they wont chamber in a normal chamber but most 2 34. You will have no problem using 2 34 shells in a 3 chambered shotgun.

As an avid shotgunner for many years i usually use 2 34 shells and have shotguns in 2 34 and 3 as far as patterns go i would probably expect that optimum would be to use 234 in the same size chamber and the same with 3 that said my Winchester 1300 has a 3chamber as does my Fabarm SXS but i usually only use 2 34 shells in them no problems at allbut does 2 34.

Why dont 2 ¾ inch shells jam in a 3-inch chamber. But you knew that. If they are 2 916 you can have the chambers cut for 2 34 shells or buy the specialty shotgun shell that are shorter than 2 34.

As to whether a 2 34 load will cycle in a 3 inch chamber the answer is an absolute maybe. I guess if it really bothers you you can always take it to a gun smith and have the chambers measured.
